Suggestions for stories about Phlyndir

The First Ones

Postby Ted » Fri Apr 08, 2011 9:18 am

Scattered across Phlyndir are ruins of an ancient civilization known as the first ones. Ehrui scholars believe that this ancient race is older than any other civilization on Phlyndir. They also believe that this civilization predates even the events of the cataclysm. Though most of what the first ones are is still shrouded in mystery, it is no secret that his ancient civilization is far more advanced in the use of magic and technology that even the Kod-Mezu and Nu'Kyoabe. Their massive ruins are filled with ancient runes that even the world's foremost rune masters cannot begin to comprehend and their mechanisms are beyond the reach of the greatest mechanics and engineers. Not only did these ancient structures show how techno-magically advanced the first ones were, but, it also boasts of quality to stand the test of time itself. An example would be the massive sky bridges that connect parts of the continents together. Though created by the ancients, it still is being used by the present occupants of Phlyndir.

However, for all their power, the first ones are now no more. Ehrui scholars aren't totally sure about what led to the dying out of the ancient race but it had to be an event affected the whole world.

The main questions here will be:

How did the First Ones disappear?
Considerations:
-There are ruins of the First Ones, which means that whatever happened caused their cities and towns to be somewhat destroyed.

What did the First Ones do in Ygothu? Are they responsible for the Wytherium outbreak in the Ygothu Darklands?

Considerations:
-The First Ones made experiments in Ygothu, although the reason is not sure.

Follow-up questions:

What can be found in Ygothu?

So they're kind of like the ancient Egyptians right? Like they must've had super awesome pyramid-building technology--I mean magic--but no one can figure out how?

In terms of how they disappeared, I thought of some fast-spreading disease they had no cure for--but then I realized this wouldn't make sense in their context, since they were so advanced. Or some kind of genocide, but who'd be around to do it to them...

Now I'm thinking maybe they could do an All Elves Go To The Undying Lands thing, and all retreat to some faraway hidden continent, bringing the secrets to their magic with them. But that's just a suggestion!

The problem with disease is not that it would be incurable, it would be that there are no remains of the First Ones. This would means that the First ones must have either up and left, or some weird genocidal magic occurred. that being said, the leaving thing is plausible, but for what conceivable reason could there be to move?

I thought that maybe they could have some kind of premonition about what the world was going to become, and they didn't like all the chaos and war they saw in the future, so they just decided to leave. c: Not sure if that jells though with what you guys had in mind for the First Ones!

I think it would require great expounding and a lot of existentialism if we try to explain why the First Ones left when they had so much power. Sounds like a very thought-provoking idea if we can pull it off, though.

As for the "no remains of the First Ones" thing, it could be that they decided to follow in the footsteps of the Old Gods and turned their spirits into magical energy to keep Phyndir together. Whether this was because they were dying of some plague or if the planet was falling apart is up to you guys.

And lastly, some First Ones ideas from other video games:

- The Forerunners (Halo): An elite race at war with a parasitic life form known as The Flood. In spite of their technology, they were fighting a losing war. They fought to the point where a desperate solution was conceived. It seemed that the only way to stop The Flood was to starve them of their food, which was every sentient life in the galaxy. And so the Forerunners built the machines known as Halos that destroyed all sentient life (they couldn't use it on the Flood because they kept changing their biological structure to become immune to the effect).

- Those Who Came Before (Assassin's Creed): Beings who were perceived to be godly by man. They are best known through the artifacts of power that they have left behind after they were long gone. I'm pretty sure they were wiped out by a meteor or something. Kinda like the dinosaurs. Maybe they were the dinosaurs. Whoah.
Hello? Is this thought on?

Try this I guess. If you had all the power in the world, what do you think would make you want to leave earth?

That's a good question because it makes you wonder what their goals would be. If the First Ones "had all the power in the world," as you say, what would they have to live for next?
I was thinking that maybe they could really love to create things and discover things--then one day they discovered the existence of this far-off lush unexplored territory, and they got all excited and wanted to go check it out, so some of them went on an expedition. Then maybe they never came back, so eventually the rest of them followed? Or something along those lines, idk.

Well, that would beg the question of why they never came back. This means there should be a reason why they left, and a reason why they wouldn't go back. Related?

Yup; two options would be: a, they found something really amazing there that made them never want to go back, or b, there was some kind of trap or curse that prevented them from ever going back.
