Suggestions for stories about Phlyndir

Auli the Great Dreamer; a spin-off

Postby Hureciel » Tue Nov 01, 2011 4:33 pm

This is exactly what the title suggest: An dreamerr, Auli, and, well, his adventures. This game idea is supposed to immerse players into the world of Phlyndir, and introduce it to the culture of the Delphynir peoples. This game is supposed to take place in the transition of Period 13 to Period 14, where the Gasoru race is discovered, and where peaceful relations are set with them.

Auli was born in a modest household, with dreams of grandeur, wishing to be a famous explorer all throughout his childhood. One day, his father dies, and after the funeral, he realizes that there is nothing left for him in his town, Aravel. His father's possessions were all left to his mother, who is more than capable of continuing their business of... whatever it is that it was. Auli takes his opportunity, packing only light equipment: a simple sword, some coins, and a loaf of bread and cheese, and with this, he makes his journey to explore Delphynir and what may lie beyond.

Armed with the stories of old, Auli opens his mind to the vast world of Phlyndir.

I imagined this game to be an open world with a sandbox aspect. Think Grand Theft Auto set in the Dungeons and Dragons universe, which means dungeon crawling. The main storyline will involve Auli's eventual involvement in the expedition discovering the Gasoru.

It is to be noted, however, that he will not be a key name in the eyes of the people of Phlyndir. A captain, or a higher up will be the one given honors for the Gasoru expedition. Auli will just be a plot device in the history of Phlyndir.

This, however, will be secondary to the playability of the game. The game is supposed to give you the complete freedom to explore the Delphynir continent (and upon finishing the main story, the Gasoru continent.) There are dungeons that can be explored, and there will be items and experience, and new spells to learn in the game.

Auli's adventure starts with him leaving his home to go on a journey, and it ends... anywhere. The main objective is to reach 100% completion. His adventures include helping towns with a crisis, chasing down a serial killer, helping rebuild a tunnel, and listening to stories.

Listening to stories? What does that mean? Auli is a very... active dreamer. Throughout the game, Auli will find storytellers and libraries. These are portals to times in history, or adventures of a mythical character, or even the retelling of the acts of the Gods. Auli, being the dreamer that he is, will imagine himself in place of the main character, and will dream up the entire story told to him. What does this mean? It means you will be able to play as the main character for numerous stories at different points in history, as Auli, the hero.

Some stories will be single player and some stories will have multiplayer allowed; it's all in the fun of living the lore of Phlyndir.

Fighting Mechanics: It's gonna be a Third person over the shoulder fighter. It won't be slow like Deadspace. You'll be running, hacking your way through enemies with magic, swordsmanship- maybe even your fists- to win fights.

Because I don't know exactly how the first game could be, I decided that if ever there was time to make this game, I'd make it like this. I'm not sayin that the first game will not have the world exploration thing, but I'm saying that this game will.

Remember how I said not everything will be included in the initial game? This one will have the tend to include as much as it can.

Besides, this is just an idea. It's nothing to be taken seriously.

The Magic in Libraries
What's there to find in a library? Books, of course! Auli can enter libraries found in almost every major city, and find about ten key books in them. Each book in their respective libraries will contain more depth about the culture of the race. Say you buy a book from the Ehrui Grand Library. Obviously, the book will be about the Ehrui History.

These books, when read in the library, will only end up with Auli reading a summary about the book. Nothing to dream with, though. The actual magic is in buying the book. Libraries in Phlyndir are all about you reading books, but only as long as it's done inside the library itself. This doesn't settle well with Auli. So what Auli does is buy the book from the library! This is very much unheard of, but the library will oblidge to Auli's request... at the cost of money. Auli will have to buy each book for a certain price. Remember how there are about ten books in each library? Well, some books will be cheaper than others. Some at about 2,000 gold pieces, but the real jewels are in the books costing well over 400,000 gold pieces. These more expensive books will be harder to "complete" (that is to say, harder to survive in when Auli starts dreaming them up.)

What does Auli gain in reading books? Well, Auli has a special ability. He has the power of Dreamsleeping. When Auli dreams, he is able to reach into the magical plane and materialize the great armors, weapons, items that he dreams about. Whatever he uses in the dream world, he uses in real life. When he dies, however... he actually just wakes up, usually waking with a "That's not what happens in the story!" and goes back to sleep, redreaming the story from a suitable point.

Auli's story.

New Game+

Wish you were someone else? Wanna restart the game with certain stats, certain items, a new face? Never fear! At the end of the main story (Resolving the conflict with the Gasoru,) The player will be able to go to Auli's room, in Auli's house, and will write a book about none other than himself!

This will function as a new game+, where the player will be able to choose what Auli will look like this time, and what fighting class he is. Aside from that, the player will be able to choose the level of Auli (ranging from 1-Auli's current level.) Depending on the level of the new Auli, he will be given the corresponding free stats and stat bonuses. Apart from that, the player can also choose the items that Auli can carry over. Anything is permitted, as long as Auli has held that item before. If Auli has held 1000 potions before, then he will be able to hold any number of potions less than or equal to 1000.

Online Game

At any point after the main story, Auli can go back to his home, his room, and write a book, but this time about the Unknown third continent of Phlyndir. He gives his protagonist a new name, a new job, and starting from level 1. How exciting is that? (Or could be)
